No country’s holidays are applied automatically. Add the dates your organisation doesn’t work, including any “observed” day when a holiday falls on a weekend.

Your result will appear here.

The calculation runs in your browser on dates only, so time zones and daylight saving time don’t affect it. No public holidays are assumed: add any that apply to you under the optional settings. To count the business days between two dates instead, use the Date Calculator.

What is a business days calculator?

A business days calculator finds the date that is a given number of business days after or before another date. Business days usually mean weekdays, Monday to Friday, with Saturdays and Sundays left out. It answers questions such as “what date is 10 business days from today?”, “when is 30 working days after the contract date?” or “what was the date 20 business days before the deadline?”.

Which days count can vary. Public holidays differ from country to country, and often by region or employer, and some countries have a Friday–Saturday weekend. So the calculator skips weekends by default, lets you choose a different business week, and lets you list the holidays you need it to skip, rather than guessing them.

How to calculate business days

  1. Pick the start date, or press Today to use today’s date.
  2. Choose After to count forward or Before to count back.
  3. Enter the number of business days, or tap a quick button such as +5 or +30, and press Calculate.

The calculator then moves one date at a time from the start date, counting only business days, until it has counted the number you entered. The start date itself is never counted, so 1 business day after a Friday is the following Monday, and 1 business day before a Monday is the previous Friday. Weekend days and listed holidays are passed over without being counted. The result is always a business day.

If the start date falls on a weekend, it is used as entered: 1 business day after a Saturday or a Sunday is the Monday, and 1 business day before a Sunday is the Friday. Entering 0 leaves the start date unchanged, the same convention spreadsheet WORKDAY functions use. Because weekends aren’t counted, counting forward and then back the same number of days only returns you to the start when it is a business day: a Saturday plus 1 is a Monday, but that Monday minus 1 is the Friday.

Business days vs working days

“Business days” and “working days” are commonly used interchangeably for Monday-to-Friday calculations, and this calculator treats them the same way. The precise meaning can still vary by organisation or country: a contract, court rule or shipping policy may exclude public holidays, define its own business week, or start counting from the next business day after a cut-off time. When a deadline matters, check the definition that applies to it, then set the business week and holidays to match.

How many business days from today?

The calculator opens with today’s date as the start date, so it answers “what date is 10 business days from today?” straight away; tap +5, +30 or any other quick button for a different count. Switch to Before to find the date a number of working days ago, for example to see when a 20-business-day notice period must have started. The quick buttons follow the direction you choose, so +30 becomes −30 when you count back.

As a rule of thumb, five business days span one calendar week, so 10 business days are two weeks and 30 business days are six weeks, plus any holidays in between. Starting on a Thursday, 30 business days later is the Thursday six weeks on, 42 calendar days away.
